Football has a ball, rocks the fall
FOOTBALL
Benedictine University became the first school in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) history to represent the league in the NCAA Division III football playoffs in consecutive seasons. The Eagles, who finished 7-3 overall and 6-1 in conference during the regular season, were sent to Alliance, Ohio on November 19 to play Mount Union in the first round of the playoffs.
Benedictine clinched a playoff berth with a 33-28 come-from-behind win over Rockford College on November 5. Benedictine trailed 21-12 late in the first half when John Borsellino ran in for a score from five yards out to begin a string of 21 unanswered points. In the playoffs, the Eagles were defeated by the Mount Union Raiders, 47-7.
VOLLEYBALL
The women’s volleyball team reaped a number of postseason honors following a 10-2 run and second-place finish in the NAC. Head coach Jennifer Wildes was selected as the conference’s Coach of the Year for the first time in her career. Abby Sattler was selected NAC Freshman of the Year. The rookie setter finished fourth in the league in assists and was a second team all-conference choice.
Brooke Bowman and Candice Cuppini received first team all-NAC recognition. Bowman had 122 kills, an average of 1.22 kills per set, while also collecting 74 digs. The Oswego, Ill. native led the Eagles with 15 solo blocks and 66 block assists. Cuppini led the team with 353 kills and 3.33 kills per set. The sophomore outside hitter had a team high .273 hitting percentage. The former NAC all-freshmen choice also had 66 digs, nine solo blocks and 25 block assists.
Haley Fitzgerald received NAC all-sportsmanship honors. The sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist tallied 94 kills and 25 aces, and was third on the team with 321 digs and 3.21 digs per set.
Benedictine finished 18-13 after losing in the semifinals of the NAC tournament to eventual champion Edgewood.
MEN’S SOCCER
The men’s soccer team achieved one of its biggest goals by returning to the NAC tournament, where it fell 2-1 to eventual runner-up Milwaukee School of Engineering. Jesse Ortiz tied the match at 1-1 in the 63rd minute with his fourth goal of the season. Orlando Esparza stopped eight shots in the defeat. Benedictine closed the year 8-9-2 and 5-4-2 in the NAC.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The women’s soccer team just missed out on the NAC tournament, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 5-6-1 conference mark. The Eagles were 7-8-2 overall on the season. Benedictine wrapped up the season with a 1-1 tie at Concordia University-Chicago with Lindsay Prokaski scoring an unassisted tally in the 20th minute to hand the Eagles an early lead.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Junior Alexis Wadowski finished as the singles runner-up in the NAC tournament, earning all-conference honors in the three-day event hosted by Benedictine University at St. Andrew’s Golf and Country Club. Wadowski rebounded from a tough first day to claim her slot. Cathryn Connolly was named to the NAC All-Sportsmanship team. Benedictine finished eighth as a team.

The fall portion of the schedule has concluded for the men’s golf team, which sits in fourth place after the first half of the NAC tournament hosted by Marian University at Whistling Straits. When providing for your child, remember what you would have wanted at their age.
“I just try to remember what I would’ve liked to have a dad do in my life,” I said to my son one day.
This little principle is part of my plan for being a good father to all of my children, including Benedictine students.
One morning, my son, Luke, walked into my study when I was getting ready to pray. Normally, I show him out and ask him to come back later. But that day something pulled at me to allow him to stay. At the time, my son was small enough to hold in one arm as I kneeled. He loved it.
He looked up at me when we were done praying together and said, “How did you know that I wanted to pray with you?” That is when I said, “I just try to remember what I would’ve liked to have a dad do in my life.”
We could use this as a principle for relating to our students in college. What would we have liked for our parents to do for us while we were away at college? Would we have liked them to keep a distance, but not too much distance? Would we have liked them to surprise us with a gift box or “survival package” filled with our favorite things? Would we have liked a card or two?
I know that what we should do is what we would want others to do for us. So, why not set the example and give our students what we always wanted when we were in college? I am asking you to sit for a moment, say a prayer for your children and then ask yourself, “What did I always want my parents to do for me in college?” Then do it.
THANKS: A note of thanks goes to the Forkin family for donating a couch and loveseat to the University Ministry Office. Our “just like your family room” project continues. We are looking for end tables, lamps and some knick-knacks that are not outdated.
Please send any topics upon which you would like me to reflect to mkurowski@ben.edu or call us at (630) 829-1310.
Wishing you happiness and heath in the coming new year.
