Benedictine University has named Kevin Broeckling as its new Associate Vice President of Student Life and Services for the Springfield branch campus.
Broeckling joined Springfield College in Illinois in 2000 as an admissions counselor and later was named the Dean of Student Affairs in 2001.
“The opportunity to work with our students and the entire Benedictine community each day is an honor and privilege,” Broeckling said.
“My focus is to nurture and advance Benedictine University's vision as we prepare our students for a lifetime as active, informed and responsible leaders in the world community.”
May 3, Bromberg named CEO [Press Release]
Michael Bromberg, who has served as the Dean of Academic Affairs for Benedictine University at Springfield since 2007, has been named the school’s Chief Executive Officer.
“The expansion of the Springfield branch campus has dictated that we restructure our administrative leadership team so that we can better take advantage and appropriately deal with the rapid growth and challenges that we face,” Bromberg said.
May 1, Student art goes on display for public view at BenU Springfield [Press Release]
Benedictine University at Springfield’s annual Student Art Exhibition is currently on display in the Charles E. Becker Library on the University campus. The exhibit, which is open to the public during regular gallery hours, features work from students enrolled in art classes during Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters.
Drawings, paintings, photographs, designs and three-dimensional work are among the pieces on display. Awards will be given at the closing reception from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 in the Becker Library Gallery. The public is invited to attend the closing reception.

March 7, Forum for Parents and Educators of Gifted Learner[Press Release]
Cynthia Sedam, Ph.D., the director of Education at Benedictine University at Springfield and liaison for Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS), will host a forum for educators and parents to discuss the benefits of above-grade level testing as a critical assessment and planning tool at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, in the Brinkerhoff Home.
“The first step in charting an effective academic program for gifted students is to assess their ability accurately,” Rosen said. “Above-grade-level testing is the best means available. High achievers hit the ceiling on standardized grade-level tests. They require a more advanced test, one designed for a higher grade level, to gain a true measure of where they are performing, and what they need moving forward.”

November 7, “Catholicism: a Global Religion” Interreligious Dialogue Panel and Community Event
A panel focused on interreligious dialogue and Catholicism will be hosted by Benedictine University at Springfield. The panel event, titled “Catholicism: a Global Religion,” will be held twice—once on Monday, November 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Beata Hall Meeting Room on the Benedictine branch campus and then again on Tuesday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m. in Dawson Hall 105 on the Benedictine branch campus.
November 3, New director for graduate business programs
Kirby brings a wealth of business expertise from service in the public and private sectors as well as higher education administration. Kirby’s understanding of insurance, worker’s compensation and other regulatory environments within a variety of industries was honed during her experience in the public sector. She worked in the private sector as an organizational consultant in the United States and Scandinavia, focusing specifically on creating effective organizations through positive change and developing learning organizations.

Enrollment numbers for the fall semester indicate an increase of more than 15 percent from last year. As of October 15, the federal enrollment reporting date, a total of 1,023 students were enrolled on the Springfield branch campus. The total includes 904 undergraduate and 119 graduate students currently enrolled this fall at Benedictine University at Springfield.

September 27, State Legislators like Benedictine’s free college tuition program
“A program like this -- where you are actually going out helping the unemployed and the non-traditional student -- I think is just wonderful,” said Illinois state Rep. Rich Brauer (R-100th). “Anytime you can take someone who is at a difficult point in their life – such as being laid off – and you give them some technical training or some additional skills, they are able to better themselves and be a lot more employable.”

Benedictine University at Springfield held its 81st Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 21, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield.
The commencement was significant in two respects – it featured the last time students would earn an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree from Springfield College in Illinois, and the first time that Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Organization Development degrees were conferred upon Benedictine University students at the Springfield branch campus.

May 11, Boris realizes lifelong ambition by becoming police chief at Benedictine
“I believe things happen for a reason,” Boris said. “It was difficult to move to a place where you do not know anyone, but the people here have become like family to me. Now I feel very at home.”
Thanks to Boris’ hard work and guidance, Benedictine’s Campus Police Department recently received its ORI number, official recognition of the department by the state of Illinois as a fully-empowered police department. ORI stands for “Originating Identification Number,” an alpha-numeric code assigned to an authorized agency that provides access to criminal justice data.

August 10, IBHE approves five new undergraduate programs to be offered in Springfield
The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved today a proposal by Benedictine University to offer five new undergraduate programs at its Springfield campus.
The newly-approved programs will lead to the following degrees: an Associate of Arts in Business Administration; a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice; a Bachelor of Arts in Management; a Bachelor of Science in Biology; and a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. Management and Business Administration are adult accelerated programs. Criminal Justice, Biology and Health Science are traditional undergraduate programs.
“We are continually working to expand our offerings to better serve students in the Springfield area and throughout central Illinois,” said Benedictine University at Springfield President William J. Carroll, Ph.D.
Benedictine University at Springfield is now approved to offer 14 traditional undergraduate degree programs. Previously approved were programs in Business and Economics, Communication Arts, Elementary Education, Finance, History, Marketing, Management and Organizational Behavior, Psychology, Sociology, Theology, and Writing and Publishing.
Benedictine also offers adult accelerated programs in Management and Organizational Behavior, Nursing (R.N. to B.S.N. completion) and Psychology; master’s programs in Education, Business Administration and Management and Organizational Behavior; and a Ph.D. program in Organization Development.

Wesley McNeese, M.D., celebrating the release of his latest book, “Can We Do That?” (Tate Publishing, February 2010). December 8, IBHE approves six new undergraduate programs to be offered in Springfield
Lisle, Illinois ~ The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved today a proposal by Benedictine University to offer six new programs at its Springfield campus.
The newly-approved undergraduate programs will lead to the following degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in History; a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology; a Bachelor of Arts in Theology; and a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Publishing.
Also approved were undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing.
Benedictine University at Springfield is now approved to offer 12 undergraduate degree programs.
“The approval of these new programs by the IBHE will greatly expand our ability to serve students in the Springfield area and throughout central Illinois,” said Benedictine University at Springfield President William J. Carroll, Ph.D.Benedictine also offers adult accelerated programs in Management and Organizational Behavior, Nursing (R.N. to B.S.N. completion) and Psychology; master’s programs in Education, Business Administration and Management and Organizational Behavior; and a Ph.D. program in Organization Development.

November 20, 2009 - January 20, 2010 Art Exhibition featuring Mixed-Media Drawings by Scott McCullar
An opening reception will be held from 4:00–7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 20, in the Becker Library Gallery where viewers will be able to meet and greet the artist. The exhibition will display recent mixed media drawings and digital prints.
McCullar is the Creative Designer for Marketing and Communications for Benedictine University at Springfield and has taught various drawing, printmaking and computer art courses since 1997 as an adjunct faculty member. The local writer and artist from Sherman has written and drawn for publishers that include DC Comics, West End Games, Shooting Star Comics and Campfire Comics. McCullar also serves as the creative designer for Quiddity International Literary Journal.

October 1 - November 5, Sergei Chepik exhibition
The first North American solo exhibition of the artwork of Sergei Chepik is being announced by Benedictine University at Springfield and the University of Illinois Springfield, co-exhibitors. This first-ever co-exhibit by the two Universities will display forty lithographs by the internationally acclaimed Russian artist who currently resides in Paris. The prints were inspired by the novel The White Guard by Mikhail Bulgakov and were commissioned in 2006, with an initial exhibit held in 2008 at the Bulgakov Museum in Moscow.
Displaying remarkably powerful images of the Russian Revolution, the Chepik co-exhibit will begin October 1, 2009, at bott the BUS Becker Library Gallery and the UIS Visual Arts Gallery, running through November 5 and October 28, respectively.
